ANC Women's League hails Zuma decision

The African National Congress Women’s League has welcomed the resolution of the ruling movement’s national executive committee (NEC) to accept the request by the movement’s second-in-command, Jacob Zuma, to resume his duties.

The committee made the decision following the acquittal of Zuma—who was dismissed last year as South Africa’s deputy president—for rape.

“As the [ANC] Women’s League, we believe that the ANC NEC decision demonstrates that the organisation is united in its fight for a better life for all. Of importance was the resolution of the NEC to condemn unruly behaviour demonstrated by some people during and after the [ANC] deputy president’s trial.

“We call on all members of the ANC and the entire alliance to act in a manner that does not seek to undermine the NEC decision.

“We remain opposed to women abuse regardless of the alleged perpetrator.

Together with the ANC we will intensify our struggle for gender equality and completely eradicate remnants of sexism that still exist in our society,” said the movement, led by Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
