Pretoria High Court judge Nkola Motata will stand trial on Wednesday for alleged drunk driving.

Motata’s case will be heard in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

He faces charges of drunk driving or alternatively reckless and negligent driving and a second count of defeating the ends of justice.

The judge was arrested on January 5 after crashing his car into a wall in Hurlingham, Johannesburg. He allegedly resisted arrest and was put in a police car at the scene by five metro police officers.

The Star newspaper reported the state as alleging Motata was “at least” four times over the legal alcohol limit when arrested.

He also allegedly misspelled the name of his legal division as “Transval Provinicial Divisionn” and struggled to write down his phone number.

Metro police said at the time that two women officers on the scene had called for assistance after the driver became “uncooperative”.

He is currently out on bail. - Sapa
