Telkom, unions reach salary deal

 JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Aug 10 2008 08:01

Telkom has agreed to offer workers a salary increase of 11,5%, said the Communications Workers' Union (CWU) on Saturday.

CWU spokesperson Gallant Roberts said the unions met with Telkom on Friday and agreed that members in the bargaining unit will get an 11% increase backdated to April 1 and a further 0,5% salary from October 1.

"The salary increments will be extended to items with monetary value on the total package concept applied by Telkom, such as medical aid", Roberts said.

"CWU and SA Communications Union (Sacu) signed the agreement with a clear caution to the employer, that the salary increments inclusive [11,5%] is still below the current inflation [11,6%] rate," he said.

The matter concerning "gain sharing" would be referred to arbitration.

The parties also agreed to engage on the possibility of backdating the 0,5% increase to June 2008. Both matters would be concluded by September 30 this year. - Sapa
