Murray & Roberts to cut 1 400 jobs

Construction firm Murray & Roberts is planning to lay off 1 400 workers as tough economic conditions limit the firm’s ability to expand, trade union Solidarity said on Thursday.

Solidarity said it already had its first meeting with the management of Murray & Roberts this week to discuss the planned retrenchments.

According to the notice issued to Solidarity, the current economic conditions as well as limited growth and expansion of Murray & Roberts’s current contracts are the main reasons for the planned retrenchments.
