Rights groups: More than 1 000 killed in Congo

Human rights groups say that more than 1 000 civilians have been killed and about 900 000 displaced in eastern Congo since January.

The report released on Tuesday by a coalition of 84 organisations says that many of the killings were carried out by Rwandan Hutu militiamen. The report says Congolese government soldiers also have targeted civilians.

The human rights groups say that United Nations peacekeepers in eastern Congo are not doing enough to protect civilians in the region.

Eastern Congo has been wracked by violence since Rwanda's 1994 genocide spilled war across the border. Hutu militias that participated in the massacres of more than 500 000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus sought refuge in Congo. -- Sapa-AP
