Twelve dead in E Cape bus accident

 JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Dec 24 2009 10:16

A twelfth person has died after a bus accident in the Eastern Cape on Thursday, traffic officials said.

"One more person died in hospital," said Tshepo Machea, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape traffic department and Arrive Alive.

Eleven people died on the scene and six others were injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a minibus taxi on the N2 between Mthatha and Qumbu.

Machea said five passengers from the taxi survived the accident.

The bus driver was the only person injured from the bus.

"The road is straight, therefore fatigue may have been the cause of the accident," said Machea.

The taxi was travelling from Port Elizabeth and the bus was travelling from North West to Mthatha when the accident occurred at about 5am.

Part of the road was closed while emergency workers cleared the scene. -- Sapa
