NPA: Dirk Prinsloo not being extradited

 JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - Feb 03 2010 09:27

South African fugitive Dirk Prinsloo will have to serve his 13 years in a Belarus jail before setting foot again on local soil, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said on Wednesday.

"We have not considered extraditing him at this stage," said NPA spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga.

"We believe the Belarus authorities will deport him shortly after serving his sentence and he will be facing the same charges that Advocate Barbie is facing." Mhaga was referring to Cezanne Visser, Prinsloo's ex-lover, who has been found guilty of fraud and the indecent assault of children.

She will be sentenced on February 8.

Prinsloo is a fugitive from justice in South Africa. He jumped bail before the trial in which he and Visser were accused of sexually abusing young girls.

He was arrested in Belarus last year after an attempted bank robbery there.

Prinsloo was sentenced on Monday to 13 years in jail in the Baranowitsji District Court in Belarus on charges of theft, assault and attempted bank robbery.

Before being led away, his last words to journalists were: "I miss you [South Africa] a lot."

Visser has welcomed his sentencing, according to a report in Beeld on Wednesday.

"It is relief for her that he did not get off scot-free," said her lawyer, advocate Johann Engelbrecht.

"He fled from his trial in South Africa like a coward.

"Hopefully this sentence will break the vicious cycle of destruction that he brings into women's lives." -- Sapa
