How to become Rica compliant

Rica deadline may be extended but rather be safe than sorry.

With just four months to go before the end-of-year deadline for Rica registration, cellphone operators have lobbied the government to extend the deadline as there is a strong chance that millions of prepaid customers may be disconnected.

But Cheryl Mulder, the managing executive of product management at Vodacom, advises consumers to register as soon as possible to avoid being disconnected at the end of December.

“We are putting in an enormous effort to make sure our customers are registered before the deadline,” says Mulder.

“This month, we introduced a competition whereby all customers who register in a week stand a chance to win one of 100 cash prizes. Each month, the prize money decreases, so in August 100 customers a week win R10 000, while in September they will each win R5 000 and in October R2 500. The quicker you Rica, the more you win.”

Rica Quicka is just one such initiative to motivate consumers to register their SIM cards in terms of the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provisional of Communication-Related Information Act (Rica).

What you need:

  • Your SIM card

  • Your ID

  • Proof of residence

  • Remember to register Sim cards used in 3G devices, too.
