Jo’burg art picks: October 1 2010

David Goldblatt’s newest solo exhibition opens this week.

  • David Goldblatt’s solo exhibition TJ: Some Things Old, Some Things New, and Some Things Much the Same opens at the Parkwood Goodman Gallery on October 7 at 6pm. This exhibition spans the career of this eminent photographer, showing a range of works from apartheid-era photo-essays on economic inequality and racial segregation to more recent series on the failure of post-apartheid governments to address the inadequacies entrenched during the apartheid years.

For local audiences, this retrospective format, which is unusual for an exhibition at a commercial venue, is an apt supplement to Goldblatt’s three most recent international exhibitions, solo
projects at the Jewish Museum and the New Museum in New York and participation in the extensive group show The Original Copy: Photography of Sculpture, 1839 to Today at the Museum of Modern Art in New York until November 1. Goldblatt will give a walkabout of the exhibition on Saturday October 9 at 10.30am. Goodman Gallery, 163 Jan Smuts Avenue, Parkwood. Tel: 011-788-1113.

  • SA Fashion Week Winter Collections hosts all their major fashion shows for the season at Arts On Main. Until Sunday October 3, the evenings will ignite with collaborative art and fashion displays by designers including Black Coffee, Amanda
Laird Cherry, Clive Rundle, Hose of Ole, Guillotine and Colleen Eitzen. Prior to Clive Rundle’s show on October 2 at 10pm, in which he showcases the latest offerings from his label Clive, Malagasy artist Joel Andrianomearisoa will give a live performance that traverses the genres of fashion, performance art and installation. Starting at 8.30pm, Andrianomearisoa’s performance, Cut Cute, forms part of his exhibition A Perfect Kind of Love, currently showing at the Goodman Gallery Project
Space at Arts on Main. Tickets for all SA Fashion Week Winter Collections events can be purchased through Computicket. For more information about Cut Cute contact the Goodman Gallery at 011-788-1113. Arts on Main, 245 Main Street, City and Suburban Johannesburg.
