Mbeki arrives to mediate in Côte d'Ivoire

Airport sources said Thabo Mbeki arrived on Sunday in Abidjan on an emergency mission to mediate after Côte d'Ivoire's disputed presidential election.

Former president Thabo Mbeki arrived on Sunday in Abidjan on an emergency mission to mediate after Côte d’Ivoire’s disputed presidential election, airport sources said.

Mbeki had been sent by the African Union (AU) to try to settle the standoff between long-term incumbent Laurent Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Outtara, who are each claiming the presidency.

Gbagbo has defied international calls for him to cede power after the United Nations recognised Ouattara as the winner, raising fears of further violence in the country where at least 17 people have been killed since last week.—AFP
