Cape film pick: September 30 2011

The ninth Shnit film festival features short films from six continents.

The ninth Shnit film festival features short films from six continents.

It takes place in Cape Town, Berne and Cologne, and for the first time this year also in Vienna, Singapore, San Francisco, Panama and San Jose.

Selected from 5 000 entries, 200-odd films will be screened over the weekend. A highlight is the Realtime Competition—three Cape Town filmmakers making three films on the theme Cape of Storms.

The film programme is divided into categories such as animation, experimental, queer, “fright fest” and peepshow. The Kaapse Bobotie programme will cover a full range of Cape Town’s film output, including music videos. Daily shnit videologs shared by host cities and live crossings between countries makes it a global exchange of culture—one festival in many cities.

Screenings at the Labia and the Grand Daddy Hotel, and this year in collaboration with Rocking the Daisies. Runs from October 5 to 9. Tickets are available at the Labia Theatre. Visit: www.shnit.org.
