Durban shopping pick: 21 October 2011

In case you needed any reminding, Christmas is just around the corner.

Opened this week by John van de Ruit, bestselling author of Spud, is Ukhisimuzi Wethu, an exhibition of original, handmade Christmas ornaments and gifts.

Made by the artists and crafters of KwaZulu-Natal, the range on show includes beaded, embroidered and felt Christmas tree ornaments, colourfully beaded tableware and gifts that include jewellery, ceramics, candles and telephone-wire products.

Since its inception more than 50 years ago, the art centre has been instrumental in implementing sustainable development projects and programmes that impart new skills and build on existing traditions. These provide a means of support for the art and craft communities of both urban and rural KwaZulu-Natal.

African Art Centre, 94 Florida Road, Wednesday October 26 at 5.30pm. Tel: 031 312 3804/5. Website: www.afriart.org.za.
