​Entertainment, arts and culture editor
Reports to: Editor
​Purpose: The entertainment editor must implement the editorial strategy as determined in conjunction with the editor. You and your team will run an integrated entertainment, arts and culture section on the M&G website and in the newspaper's Friday section, along with planning for other M&G platforms including tablets and mobile. You will also be responsible for the lifestyle and e-commerce sections.
Responsibilities
- Produce content that integrates print, online, mobile and social media
- Develop a publishing strategy that converges print and digital resources
- Foster, and participate in, an M&G entertainment, arts and culture community
- Combine insight and analysis with a passion for popular culture
- Have a familiarity with, and interest in, the entertainment industries of other African countries
- Plan and implement a social media strategy for the department
- Liaise between the M&G fast and slow news teams, and take part in all relevant meetings and planning
- Manage a converged team that publishes across all M&G platforms
- Be able to edit content to the standards of the M&G
- Create content – a minimum of three original pieces per week for digital, and one for print
Qualifications and experience
- Appropriate post-matric qualification or equivalent, preferably in journalism
- At least four years' experience in a news organisation
- Experience on a news desk or in a commissioning editor role is an advantage
- Online experience is an advantage
- Deep and broad experience in arts journalism

Entertainment content producer
Reports to: Entertainment, arts and culture editor
Purpose: The entertainment, arts and culture content producer will be involved in: writing, uploading, social media, multimedia and basic content production.
Responsibilities
- Produce entertainment, arts and culture content across the M&G platforms
- Sub contributors' copy, and publish to our website
- Attend entertainment events as the M&G's representative and create content where necessary
- Produce articles, multimedia and social media as appropriate
- Write cleanly and quickly, with minimal editing needed
- Produce a minimum of five pieces of online content per week, and two for print
Qualifications and experience
- Appropriate post-matric qualification or equivalent, preferably in journalism
- Basic HTML experience
- At least two years' experience in a news organisation
- Online experience is an advantage, as is reporting experience
Competencies / knowledge
- Strong knowledge of media laws and ethics
- A firm grasp of current affairs, especially locally
- A thorough understanding of the M&G news brand
- Ability to quickly assimilate and apply the M&G style
- Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure
- Ability to meet deadlines
Entertainment sub
Reports to: Entertainment, arts and culture editor
Purpose: You'll need the usual subbing skills, but with a bent for entertainment – and digital. You'll be updating the site, which in old-fashioned terms used to be called a webmaster, and making sure the copy sings whether on paper or online.
Responsibilities
- Edit and revise original copy
- Copy tasting and rewriting of wire copy
- Work with writers to create well-written, clean copy
- Publish articles, pictures and multimedia using the M&G's online content management system
- Upload the business newspaper content online and ensure it is enhanced, with all relevant multimedia, links and graphics, and well-promoted
- Collaborate with the M&G online and tablet teams as necessary
Qualifications and experience
- Appropriate post-matric qualification or equivalent, preferably in journalism
- At least three years' experience in a news organisation
- Experience as a sub-editor
- Online experience is an advantage
- Experience of working on a publishing content management system is an advantage
Competencies / knowledge
- First-class English language skills
- Understanding of news organisation production process
- A good grasp of current affairs, both local and international
- Understanding of newspaper writing style and ability to edit copy accordingly
- A knack for writing snappy headlines, blurbs and captions
- Ability to work quickly and accurately under pressure
