  • Extracts from the Underground is an original South African sound and visual installation that personalises the human experience in the anonymity of the industrial mining sector. It is by award-winning musical composer Philip Miller and sponsored by Hollard. Miller’s soundscapes, complemented by video projections by Catherine Meyburgh, feature three rare archival sources: a 1967 Miners’ Fanakalo Dictionary, issued by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines; a register of mining accidents dating from the 1930s from the mining company, Simmer and Jack Mines, housed in the Cullinan Library at the University of Witwatersrand; and Reportage, historical newsreel footage from the 1970s and contemporary broadcasts of the mining unrest at the Lonmin platinum mines in Marikana.   • Over the Rainbow explores democracy and whether the ­ideals set out 20 years ago are a reality. A large effort was made to acquire art that reflects contemporary society and the challenges faced by our new democracy and draws on the vast collection of the Johannesburg Art Gallery. It is curated by Musha Neluheni and features artists such as Zanele Muholi, Pieter Hugo, William Kentridge, Penny Siopis, Thando Mama, Churchill Madikida and Diane Victor. WHEN Until August 31.   • The Basha Uhuru Freedom Fest, Constitution Hill’s flagship youth festival, showcases urban youth culture through music, film, poetry, art and performance. It is a collaboration between Constitution Hill and the Kalashnikovv Gallery. It takes place over three days, with the main event on June 14, and comprises many elements, such as art exhibitions, live art, films, creative network exchanges, a music festival and a market. Featured musicians and artists include Desmond and the Tutus, Tumi, the Brother Moves On, Ricky Rick, BLK JKS Soundsystem and Lazola Gola. WHEN June 12 – 14. WHERE Constitution Hill.   • The Stellenbosch University Museum, in co-operation with the Nelson Mandela Museum, is currently hosting two exhibitions: Dear Mr Mandela, Dear Mrs Parks: Children’s Letters, Global Lessons (inspired by the hundreds of children around the world who wrote letters to Mandela and the late Rosa Parks) and Freedom XX: 20 Pieces of Democracy (curated by the staff of the University Museum). For the latter, each of 11 staff members were asked to select an artwork that, in his or her opinion, represented the period 1994 â€“ 2014 and to write a short piece explaining why the work represented the period.   • A project of the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts Gallery’s aweh! programme, supported by the National Lotteries Distribution Trust Fund, What U Say ’bout What? is a group exhibition by new artists from leading tertiary art institutions in KwaZulu-Natal and secondary school arts pupils. It offers an insight into what the youth are saying about their social, cultural and political disposition 20 years after democracy. On Thursday nights during the exhibition, the aweh! programme will continue its gatherings, inviting artists from all disciplines and initiatives to present their practices and passions.
