Police were called in to remove Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MPLs from the Gauteng legislature on Tuesday, Times Live reported.

Speaker Ntombi Mekgwe reportedly ruled that seven EFF MPLs dressed in red overalls leave the House as their attire was inappropriate.

But the police failed to remove the offending MPLs, according to the report.

Mekgwe said the EFF’s red overalls were inappropriate because they had the word “Asijiki [we will not retract]”, which she said was party insignia, inscribed on the back.

The EFF refused to leave, forcing a 10-minute adjournment. ANC and Democratic Alliance MPLs left the council chamber but the EFF remained seated, adamant they would not leave.

Television monitors showing what was happening in the chamber were switched off and the public and media galleries were emptied. – Sapa
