M&G is hiring: Revise subeditor

The M&G is seeking a full-time revise subeditor with strong news instincts and excellent general knowledge.

This is a full-time position, based at the M&G Media offices in Rosebank, Johannesburg.

Reports to: Chief subeditor 

Permanent / Fixed Term: Permanent

This is a full-time position, based at the M&G Media offices in Rosebank, Johannesburg. The position is available immediately. Prospective candidates must have an appropriate tertiary degree and at least 10 years experience in editing news, feature, analysis and opinion pieces, ideally in a newspaper environment. The candidate should have strong news instincts, excellent general knowledge and a deep love of and flair for the English language. 

Purpose: To revise editorial copy at the Mail & Guardian

Key outputs: 
• Assist the chief sub-editor and deputy chief sub-editor in maintaining the Mail & Guardian’s high standards throughout all editorial sections of the M&G 
• Ensure that all elements of copy are well edited for sense, grammar and M&G style, spelling and accuracy, length and consistency, and legal and ethical compliance 
• Provide subeditors with regular and timeous feedback to improve their skills and the quality of M&G products 
• Ensure that the revise queue and its copy flow are efficiently managed throughout the production cycle 
• Be the custodian of the M&G’s style guide, ensuring that an updated version is distributed among editorial staff 
• Assist the chief sub and deputy chief sub in conducting regular performance reviews of subeditors 
• Communicate with the chief sub and deputy chief sub regularly and timeously on all relevant issues that affect overall quality, deadline adherence and subs’ performances

Required qualifications & experience: 
• Appropriate post-matric qualification or equivalent 
• At least 10 year’s experience as a revise subeditor or senior subeditor on a major newspaper

Knowledge: 
• A proven flair for headlines, subheads, intros and captions 
• Superior command of the English language 
• Knowledge of media law and ethics 
• Excellent general knowledge as well as an understanding of world and South African politics

• Ability to assimilate and apply M&G style quickly
