Sevens Tournament: Flyers Push Sa To Quarters

Seabelo Senatla, Steven Hunt and debutant Ruhan Nel made their presence felt on the opening day of the Gold Coast Sevens tournament in Australia on Saturday.

The Springbok Sevens flyers scored hat-tricks to comfortably guide the team to the Cup quarter-finals. South Africa will now face hosts Australia in one of the four Cup quarter-final matches on Sunday.

The Commonwealth Games winners beat Wales 19-12 and shrugged off a slow start to eventually outplay American Samoa 48-0 in their second outing. Debutant Nel grabbed the headlines in the match against Samoa, where he scored a second half hat-trick.

“I thought I would do very well to get two minutes of action on the first day. To score three times after coming on as a substitute was really unbelievable,” Nel said. “It is a great feeling to be part of the Springbok Sevens and to score a try for the team is just a wonderful feeling.”

Kenya were no match for the Springbok Sevens, who scored a clinical 45-0 victory in their last Pool B outing of the day. The rest of the Cup quarterfinal action sees defending champions New Zealand face England, Fiji against Wales and Argentina versus Samoa. – Sapa
