Johannesburg

  • British rock band The Kooks will perform at the 2015 Vodacom In the City music festival, alongside German folk duo Milky Chance and Australian six-piece alternative band The Cat Empire. Local acts include P.H.Fat, Al Bairre and this year’s Open the City winner, Grassy Spark. Vodacom In the City is a day festival.   • The Word N Sound International Youth Poetry Festival is back with the finest poets from around the world. California-based, Kenyan-born poet, writer and teacher Warsan Shire will headline the event. The line-up also includes Kabomo, Flex Boogie, Mandi Poefficient Vundla, Koleka Putuma, Neil Atlantis (formally known as Blindfold) and Chef & the Kitchen. Pretoria

  • The 22nd annual Japanese Film Festival kicks off in Pretoria this weekend and then moves to Cape Town (October 9–10) and Johannesburg (October 16–18). This year’s schedule features Until the Break of Dawn, Tamako Love Story, The Kirishima Thing, Wood Job! and My Little Sweet Pea. All films are in Japanese with English subtitles. WHEN October 2–4. Cape Town

  • The Cape Town Fringe Festival features more than 70 theatre, dance, performance art, physical theatre and music productions.
