Britons are ruder than they were a decade ago, according to a survey on Monday that showed almost three-quarters of people think manners should be taught at school. A third believes bad manners are the catalyst for much of the anti-social behaviour in Britain, the ITV poll found.
One of Britain’s best-known children’s book series, Enid Blyton’s Famous Five, has been turned into a 21st-century cartoon — to a mixed reception from purists. The ”lashings” of ginger beer and cream buns have gone, replaced with cellphones, laptops, iPods and pizza.

Convicted killer Steve Wright was told by a judge on Friday that he will spend the rest of his life behind bars for his six-week ”targeted campaign of murder” against five prostitutes. Wright (49) killed the five drug-addicted women around the city of Ipswich in late 2006.

London’s police force was found guilty on Thursday of putting the public at risk over the killing of an innocent Brazilian that police mistook for a suicide bomber in 2005. Police shot electrician Jean Charles de Menezes (27) seven times in the head after he boarded an underground train in south London on July 22 2005.

The parents of missing Madeleine McCann repaid two instalments of their mortgage with money from the fund set up to help find her, their spokesperson confirmed on Tuesday. But Kate and Gerry McCann stopped taking money from the £1-million ”Find Madeleine” fund after they were made official suspects, Clarence Mitchell said.

A new crackdown on ”cyber bullying” was unveiled by the British government on Friday in a bid to stamp out the growing problem in schools. The new measures aim to protect pupils and teachers from abusive SMSs, phone calls and emails and offensive or violent video clips posted on the internet.
