British couple in Jo'burg hospital after elephant fall

The middle-aged British man and wife hurt in a fall from an elephant in Hartbeespoort on Thursday have been transferred to the Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg. The incident took place while they were getting on to an African elephant after an awareness programme in which they had touched and fed the animals.

No betrayal from govt, says Maduna

The government could not give in to pressure from "shrill, shriek and opportunistic" voices claiming the people's cause had been betrayed, former minister of justice Penuell Maduna said in Johannesburg on Thursday. "It has not been betrayed," he told the business community at the launch of a new fund-raising system run under the auspices of The Giving Organisation.

Cosatu criticism leaves Mboweni unmoved

South African Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni's positive stance on cheap Chinese and Indian goods and services remained unchanged on Tuesday in the face of government and trade union criticism. Mboweni was labelled "irresponsible" by Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi earlier in the day.

SA airport security 'satisfactory'

Security at South Africa's airports and on its aircraft is satisfactory following the terror threat uncovered in the United Kingdom, the National Aviation Security Committee said on Thursday. South African Airways said on Thursday that it would not cancel flights to the UK, but it warned of lengthy delays on return flights.

Transnet, unions sign restructuring accord

Transnet and the four unions representing its staff signed an agreement on Tuesday governing the transformation of the parastatal. The signing marked the end of a dispute which began last August and led to two days of national strikes in March that crippled the transport industry.

Broadcasting commission hears Tshwane complaint

The Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa reserved judgement on Monday on whether the South African Broadcasting Corporation was misleading the public by referring to Tshwane instead of Pretoria in radio and television broadcasts. The two-hour hearing followed complaints by viewers and political parties.
