Ukraine president, PM make few moves to compromise

Ukraine’s antagonistic leaders said on Thursday they favoured a compromise to resolve a stand-off prompted by the president’s dissolution of Parliament, but neither appeared to make immediate concessions. President Viktor Yushchenko, swept to power by the mass protests of the 2004 ”Orange Revolution”, dissolved the chamber and called a new parliamentary election for May 27.

Putin alarmed by Georgia’s possible use of force

The Russian Federation is worried Georgia may try to resolve its problems with two separatist regions by resorting to force and is determined to prevent it doing so, President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday. The Kremlin leader, answering viewers’ questions on live television, said Moscow had no intention of taking in Georgia’s breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
