Our "national skills training ­strategy" is dysfunctional. What remains unclear is whether it is because of simple political and bureaucratic incompetence or whether the policy is distorted intentionally by ideology. The most likely answer is both.

What is also clear is that the business sector is the only group with the self-interest and clout to make the higher education department rethink the incoherent proposals that have come forth under the stewardship of Minister Blade Nzimande.

If business cannot cultivate economic sense in forums such as the National Economic and Development Labour Council, it must do so independently in the wider political arena.  – Sean Archer, Rondebosch
