Motorists warned to prepare for Siyanqoba traffic

Motorists have been advised that roads will be closed and traffic congested near FNB Stadium in Nasrec on Sunday, where the ANC will be holding its final election rally.

“The road network around the FNB Stadium and its stadium areas will be affected by the hosting of the event of this magnitude,” said Gauteng Traffic Police spokesperson Obed Sibasa in a statement issued on Saturday.

He said the estimated crowd for the event – scheduled to begin at 9am – was around 200 000 people.

Road closures would start at 3am and continue until about 6pm.

Motorist were advised to avoid highways including the Golden Highway, Soweto Highway, the N1 south Soweto/Nasrec, Diepkloof interchange offramp and New N17 highway.

Main Reef, Nasrec, Adcock Ingram, Rand Show, Crownwood and Booysens Reserve Roads were among those which would be affected by traffic operations.

Alternatives
Alternatives routes suggested included using Main Reef Road from central Johannesburg towards Soweto via New Canada Road, Elias Motsoaledi Road and towards Roodepoort.

Motorists could also use the M1 South but should avoid the Nasrec off-ramp.

The N12 west towards Soweto, Chris Hani Baragwanath Road, Carltonville and Zuurbekom could also be utilised.

For those travelling to the event, parking was available at the Nasrec Expo Centre, Shareworld, Gate G at SAFA House and PS parkings at the Stadium.

“Motorists are advised not to be redirected to illegal parking areas by illegal car guards, traffic officials will be on site to assist motorists.”

Live broadcast
Public transport could also be used to get to the rally with trains, taxis, Reya Vaya and other buses companies operating on the day.

President Jacob Zuma is expected to address the rally – which will be broadcast live on SABC, eNCA and ANN7 – at 1pm.

Singers performing at the rally would include Zahara, Ifani, Professor, Mzwakhe Mbuli, and Mafikizolo. – Sapa
