The previous event, the Fête de la Musique, in Melville on June 30, pulled in the crowds, given its emphasis on revelry and the urban outdoors. Now here comes the next big French thing: the flagship exhibition 20th Century Masters: The Human Figure. It is a collection of important French art the likes of which have not been seen in Johannesburg. The selection comprises about 40 works from the collections of France’s leading provincial cultural institutions by early modernists Fernand Leger, Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Wilfredo Lam, and earlier masters Gustav Courbet, Jean-François Millet, Edouard Manet, Edgar Degas and August Renoir. It is curated by Sylvie Ramond, director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon.
