His new exhibition is It’s About You and features a single, gigantic sculptural assemblage titled For the Love of Chicken. More than three years in the making, it is described as “a meditation on excrement, detritus, waste, sex, violence, consumerism and greed, channelled into a supremely handmade object that is part documentary, part commentary, part time capsule and part outhouse”. Running concurrently is the Community Punching Bags project, an initiative by artist and Michaelis lecturer Johann van der Schijff in collaboration with high schools in Cape Town. In both figurative and arrestingly literal fashion, the works produced by the project demonstrate that taboo topics such as discrimination, racism, xenophobia and sexism can be addressed in a creative way.
