In a new interview with critic Gwen Ansell for M&G Online, she says that Gripper’s performance at Melville’s Lucky Bean restaurant will present music from his new album, One Night On Earth, a reworking of traditional Malian music. “But,” says Gripper, “my live shows are much more free-flowing than the albums; it’s likely I’ll play material from other sources too.” Malian music, which originates from formal compositions for royal patrons, stems from a context similar to that which produced the Bach family, writes Ansell. And Gripper reflects that “it takes us back to Bach by a fresh road”.
