She has performed at venues around the world and graced the stages at many honoured occasions, including Nelson Mandela’s 1994 presidential inauguration. An educator, administrator and ambassador, she serves on several boards. Considering this weighty legacy, it is easy to forget how ground-breaking Khumalo’s music is. Always receptive to difference and ignoring borders artificially created by culture, language and history, she glides from traditional South African and classical European sounds to jazz improvisation and modern composition. Her classical repertoire includes, among others, Handel’s Messiah, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, both the Verdi and Mozart requiems and Mzilikazi Khumalo’s Zulu epic, uShaka kaSenzangakhona. Besides that, she has released three jazz albums. This legacy is celebrated in Reflect. Celebrate. Live: The University Tour.
