Absa L'Atelier Art Awards

The annual Absa L'Atelier Art Awards were announced last week. Two works took top honours. Selective Unveiling by Elrie Joubert was the overall winner and Mama Uyimbohodo II by Bambo Sibiya received the Gerard Sekoto award for the most promising artist with an annual income of less than R60000.

Now in its 27th year, the Absa L’Atelier Art Competition, in partnership with the South African National Association for the Visual Arts, is the longest-running art contest on the continent. Whether or not that makes it the most influential is questionable, but the press release sure blows its own horn. Joubert’s winning work apparently “allows the viewer to partake in the aestheticised scientific examination of the artist’s private collection of miniature natural objects”, whereas Sibiya’s linocut, drypoint and embossing celebrates the power of women.
