Visual art: Black Folk

Cape Town

Jared Thorne promises to touch a raw nerve in Cape Town with his new exhibition Black Folk.

The show is the culmination of the Boston-born artist’s recent fellowship at the University of Cape Town and poses many provocative questions. He questions why black Africans find the Mother City’s embrace “suffocating instead of welcoming”. In his search for answers, Thorne embarked on a transcontinental journey to explore expressions of black middle-class culture.
