A series of temporary residencies in Germany, Wales, Norway and Egypt followed before he settled in South Africa. In 2007 he completed his master’s degree in fine arts at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, where he lives with his wife and two children. In Salim’s unique painterly environment of evocative, post-abstractionist narratives, he reconstructs fragmented memories of a boyhood in a harsh desert landscape and those of the equally harsh climes and glacial people of Northern Europe.
