Art: Aurora

Cape Town

The feminine side of femininity rarely gets an outing in contemporary art, in which gender and identity politics tend to dominate female group exhibitions.

Aurora, featuring work by female illustrators, promises to buck this trend by focusing on all things “soft, magical, beautiful” and “enchanting.” Even the press release is girly, typed in a curling, twirling, frivolous New Gothic font. In their work, the women outwit the clichés to present an image of feminine beauty that’s fanciful, sardonic, meditative, funny, mad, sexy and even transgressive.
