Symposium: Afrikan hip-hop

Since its 1980s introduction to Africa, hip-hop culture has influenced the local style, identity and language of urban youth.

Now it is increasingly attracting scholarly attention. This symposium is part of the Afrikan Hip-hop Caravan — an African grassroots arts and culture collectives initiative that crosses borders to discuss and celebrate inspirational underground hip-hop culture in six African cities: Cape Town, Johannesburg, Harare, Nairobi, Dakar and Tunis. This unique event gives scholars, artists and civil society activists space to discuss the state of African hip-hop and its relevance.
