Before Cyrildene became Chinatown, Commissioner Street in the central business district was the heart of Jo’burg’s first Chinese community. In the 1950s there were two popular restaurants — the Little Swallow, now Swallows Inn — and the now closed Dragon’s Pearl in Delvers Street. The Johannesburg Heritage Foundation leads this tour about the history of Chinese people in this historic area and the plans for its redevelopment.
