'Powerful sanction'
Addressing the Press Freedom Commission hearing in Johannesburg, Mail & Guardian Editor-in-chief Nic Dawes said South Africa's press has a powerful system of co-regulation which gives representation to citizens and the media, and that, while financial penalties against newspapers who erred might be discussed, 'giving up space [to set the record straight] and credibility is a powerful sanction'.
