Magakwe equals SA’s 24-year-old 100m record

Sprinter Simon Magakwe equalled the 24-year-old national men’s 100 metres record at the SA Student Athletics Championships in Johannesburg on Friday.

Magakwe clocked 10.06 seconds in the semi-finals to match the national mark set by Johan Rossouw, also in Johannesburg, in 1988.

“I knew I could do it,” Magakwe said after the race.

The 25-year-old had threatened to break the record two weeks earlier, clocking a personal best of 10.11 to defend his title at the SA Senior Championships in Port Elizabeth.

In Friday afternoon’s final, Magakwe clocked 10.16 to win the national student title. — Sapa
