The ANC’s national executive committee will meet on Monday to discuss youth league president Julius Malema’s expulsion from the party, according to media reports on Sunday.

The special NEC was convened to discuss preparations for the party’s national policy conference.

But according to the Sunday Times and the Sunday Independent, it would also discuss Malema’s fate.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, ANC treasurer-general Matthews Phosa, and deputy secretary-general Thandi Modise were not in favour of Malema’s expulsion, the Sunday Times reported.

Youth league spokesperson Magdalene Moonsamy was quoted as saying: “We are expecting the matter to be discussed and resolved in the executive meeting on Monday.”

The Sunday Independent noted that Malema did not enjoy popular support among NEC members.

President Jacob Zuma was believed to enjoy majority support, according to the paper.

ANC spokesperson Jackson Mthembu was not immediately available for comment.
