Mafikizolo has been nominated twice for song of the year in this year's Metro FM Music Awards.
Mafikizolo has been nominated twice for song of the year in this year's Metro FM Music Awards.

This weekend, for the second consecutive year, the 13th annual Metro FM Music Awards will be held in Durban.

The theme of the awards show, taking place on Saturday March 1, is "Celebrating 20 Years of Beat" – a showcase of the journey of South African music over the past 20 years.

This year the show will be hosted by two of Metro FM's presenters, Phat Joe and Pearl Thusi. Award-winners are chosen based on public votes.

Afro-pop group Mafikizolo made a strong comeback into the music industry last year with the release of Reunited. Mafikizolo has been nominated in four categories with two of their songs competing for the song of the year award.

One of the highly contested categories this year is for the best dance album award, which sees producers Uhuru, Mi Casa, Lulo Café, Heavy K and Zakes Bantwini compete against each other.

This year only three rappers were nominated in the best hip-hop album category, namely iFani, Kwesta and L-Tido.

However, four rappers were nominated in the best music video category, along with Donald.

Da Les for Heaven, Khuli Chana's hit Mnatebawen, Ghetto Ruff artist Veezo for Money, Sex, Clothes, Girls, Xhosa rapper iFani for Milli and Donald's Your Joy.

The awards will be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Conference Centre (ICC), and will be broadcast live on SABC1, at 8pm.
