    The facts

    • Zimbabwe is landlocked and bordered by South Africa, Mozambique, Botswana and Zambia.
    • The official language is English, but most of the population speak Shona.
    • In the 1880s, the British arrived; in 1989 the name Southern Rhodesia was adopted.
    • Following colonial rule, a white-minority government under Ian Smith declared unilateral independence on November 11 1965.
    • Zimbabwe attained independence on April 18 1980, under Robert Mugabe as prime minister and Canaan Banana as president.
    • Mugabe became president on January 1 1988, following constitutional changes.
    • An estimated 1 000-plus Zimbabwean refugees and asylum seekers enter South Africa every day.
