Greening the Future

In celebration of World Environmental Week in June 2010, the finalist and winners will be honoured at an awards ceremony, hosted by M&G Media Limited, as well as in a special supplement featured in the newspaper on June 4. The awards are designed to heighten public, government and business awareness of corporate environmental investment. They aim to inspire innovation and action to address the causes of climate change, to reduce the impact on water resources and biodiversity and to improve eco-efficiency.

The awards are judged by a panel of experienced and forward-thinking individuals involved in shaping environmental sustainability in South Africa. Last year an agriculture category was added to the awards that rewarded “green innovations” in sustainable farming methods and projects. Journalists who report on green and energy-relevant issues are also honoured. This year climate change will continue to receive a lot of attention as the world continues down the road to a climate change deal.

Disappointingly, Copenhagen failed to deliver the legally binding agreement to fight climate change that the world had hoped for. The emphasis is now very much on Mexico City to deliver where Copenhagen failed. In the spirit of this debate the awards also feature a category that deals with businesses making a difference to combat climate change. The Energy Efficiency and Carbon Management award will reward organisations that demonstrate pioneering efforts to conserve energy.
