Coming out tops

The Mail & Guardian once again took home several awards at the 9th annual Mondi Shanduka awards, 2010.

The prestigious competition saw our investigative reporter, Adriaan Basson, win the award in the Investigative Journalism category, for his work on Bosasa. Read his background on Bosasa on the left as well as the original article.

Proving its status as SA's premier investigative paper, the M&G has won this award five times over the past eight years, which is even more exciting with the recent launch of our new investigative unit AmaBhungane.

Judges said: "Traditional legwork, perseverance, courage and an ability to look for information beyond the obvious sources resulted in evidence-based reporting that has had far-reaching results."

Basson was also a runner up in the "Twenty Ten" category for his work relating to Fifa and the World Cup.

Weekly columnist Nikiwe Bikitsha won the award for Creative Journalism for her story 'Google me baby'. The e.tv anchor describes the background to the story here.

Judges said of Bikitsha's piece: "Nikiwe Bikitsha’s brave pieces drag us into the fraught terrain of "male-dom" and how it misinterprets femaleness. She takes no prisoners when it comes to people in power, be it the national police commissioner or the president of the republic."

Our former sport reporter, Lucky Sindane received a special commendation for his work in sports journalism. See his article, 'The colour of loyalty' on the left.

The paper also received a special commendation for the Joel Mervis Award for layout, typography, pictures and graphics and printing and production.

And of course Jonathan Shapiro, or Zapiro as he is known, won the award for best editorial cartoons for his work, several of which featured in the M&G. Read his description on the left.

Meanwhile the M&G's newest investigative reporter, Gcina Ntsaluba, who has joined us at Amabhungane, won the award for the best story of the year, 'Broken Homes', which he wrote while working for Daily Despatch.

He beat 600 other entrants to grab the big prize. Judges said: "In bringing the voices of the often marginalised rural citizens to mainstream papers, Ntsaluba produced a story that impacted beyond the borders of the Eastern Cape. It led to the intervention by the Minister of Human Settlements and a visit from Parliament’s Housing Portfolio Committee."
