Opposition parties renew calls for Selebi to go

Opposition parties have renewed their calls for police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi's dismissal after further allegations were made against him on Friday. "If the latest allegations against ... Selebi prove to be true, then [Safety and Security] Minister Charles Nqakula has no option but to fire him," the Democratic Alliance's Dianne Kohler-Barnard said.

Selebi to appear in court on February 1, says NPA

Police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi, who is facing corruption charges, will appear in court on February 1, prosecutors said on Thursday. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Tlali Tlali said Selebi would appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court. He gave no further details.

Meaning of the Selebi saga

There's horror in the air. Read it in the words of Mathatha Tsedu, the City Press editor, when he writes of pain so fierce it is like an arrow piercing his soul as he mourns his son. Thirty-one-year-old Avhatakali Netshisaulu was forced off a Johannesburg road two weeks ago and murdered. His body was stuffed into the boot of his car. The car was torched and his body charred.

It's a smear campaign, says 'corrupt' Selebi

National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi believes a smear campaign is being waged against him to remove him from his post. "I don't do crime; I am not corrupt," Selebi reacted to newspaper reports implicating him, his Deputy Commissioner Andre Pruis and other senior police officers in criminal activity.

Now state gags Mail & Guardian

The Mail & Guardian has once again been prevented from publishing a major story -- this time by the state. Hours before the M&G print deadline on Thursday, the Office of the State Attorney, on behalf of the Scorpions, warned the newspaper that if it failed to undertake not to publish a story relating to the Selebi-Agliotti scandal, an urgent interdict would be sought.

Parties call for Selebi's head

Opposition parties have called for the immediate suspension of police National Commissioner Jackie Selebi, in light of his failure to prevent the National Prosecuting Authority from prosecuting him. Selebi's urgent application was denied in the Pretoria High Court on Thursday. Judge Nico Coetzee said the application bore no merit and it was struck off the roll.

Kebble's bizarre CCB link

The South African Revenue Service (Sars) has identified a staggering R226-million diverted via suspect share transactions for the benefit of murdered mining magnate Brett Kebble. And some of the assets appear to have been moved under the name of a former Civil Cooperation Bureau (CCB) agent.

ANCYL link to Kebble fraud

Prominent members of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) have been implicated in a R268-million fraud being investigated as part of a forensic audit on companies run by the late Brett Kebble. The youth league has been among the most consistent supporters of former deputy president Jacob Zuma and is likely to be hit hard by these claims against its most prominent business members.

Kebble had partners in crime

The African National Congress Youth League and Brett Kebble’s other political clients must face facts: the vast scale of the murdered businessman’s crimes has become inescapable. What has also become clear is that Kebble could not have looted and manipulated the companies he controlled without the active or unknowing participation of others.
