Tired of hearing the same cliches about Africa? The M&G is relaunching our Voices of Africa series. In this video we meet some of the people whose stories uplift the continent. We aim to show how we live, not how we die.

About Voices of Africa

Life in Africa is not a one-dimensional struggle to survive war, poverty, corruption and disease. Nor is it just an ongoing saga of famine and failure. In our Voices of Africa series, we aim to show how we live, not how we die.

Our essays are written by Africans about life in "their" Africa - ordinary people getting on with their own lives, often in the face of adversity. These stories aim to give us glimpses across the fence into the daily lives, loves and frustrations of our neighbours on the continent that go beyond the usual headlines. From tales of newspaper landlords in Addis Ababa to superheroes in Nairobi or the high-cost of wedding "contributions" in Dar es Salaam, we scout for fresh, original voices and lively stories that bring our readers insights into the experiences of the people who call some corner of this continent home.

Welcome to our Africa, explored as never before.

Contributors are invited from all African countries except South Africa. To submit, please email your piece - under 1200 words - to voices@mg.co.za along with a very brief biography. Please note, due to the large number of submissions, only those accepted for publication will be contacted.
