Federer finds his feet as Haas halts red-hot Roddick

World number one Roger Federer, in search of his first title of 2008, took no chances on Sunday as he moved smoothly into the third round of the Indian Wells Masters Series. The top-seeded Swiss, who enjoyed a first-round bye, defeated Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3, 6-2 in his first ATP outing since a first-round ouster at Dubai last week.

On-form Federer speeds into semifinals

Roger Federer didn’t give Ivan Ljubicic a look in on Thursday as he sped past the Croatian Davis Cup hero and into the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters Series. Ljubicic had stretched the Swiss world number one to three sets in three of their five encounters last year, but Federer quickly sucked any suspense out of this one, needing just 66 minutes to post a 6-2, 6-3 victory.

Agassi baffled by another early exit

A baffled Andre Agassi was bundled out of the ,27-million Pacific Life Open 7-5, 6-2 on Monday by Germany’s Tommy Haas. Despite his status as the Masters Series event’s eighth seed, Agassi clearly had his work cut out for him against Haas, who has already won titles this year in Delray Beach and Memphis.

Former world number one Kim Clijsters captured her second Indian Wells WTA title in three years on Saturday, capping a remarkable run in just her second tournament back from injury. The 21-year-old Belgian continued her stranglehold on American Lindsay Davenport by beating the world number one 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the final.

Injured Agassi out of Indian Wells

Eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi withdrew from the quarterfinals of the Indian Wells ATP Masters Series event in California on Friday with a foot injury. The 34-year-old American said he woke up on Friday with an extremely sore left toe, which made it impossible for him to play against Australian Lleyton Hewitt.

Clijsters on the comeback trail

Former world number one Kim Clijsters continued her comeback from injury on Wednesday, overpowering Nicole Pratt 6-2, 6-1 in the first round of the ,1-million Pacific Life Open. The 21-year-old Belgian needed just 49 minutes to dispatch the Australian, covering the court with a wide selection of shots and hammering 16 winners to Pratt’s four.
