As global sports icon Muhammad Ali celebrates his 65th birthday on Wednesday, the former heavyweight champion’s glory is undiminished by the ailment that has dimmed his flamboyant manner. At an age when most working Americans retire, Ali’s legend has been epic for decades and his absence from the ring for nearly a quarter of a century has not diminished his legacy.
Undefeated Barbaro stormed into the lead at the top of the stretch on Saturday and won the Kentucky Derby convincingly after a five-week layoff. It also was a victory in the Derby debut for trainer Michael Matz, who 17 years ago led three children to safety after their plane crashed into an cornfield.
Even now, almost five years later, horse trainer Bob Holthus shakes his head about the ordeal. The threat of a quarantine is sometimes just one stall or one mosquito bite away. Of all the dangers on the track, nothing quite compares to the panic a possible outbreak can cause.

While the Muhammad Ali Centre that opened in Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday pays tribute to the legendary boxer’s life, it is people such as Mexican physician Scott Shelton it seeks to inspire as a living legacy. An education and outreach portion of the centre is aimed at sparking people to achieve their dreams and reach their potential.
The handwritten recipe that launched a fast-food dynasty and made colonel Harland Sanders world famous is locked away at KFC headquarters — its contents so concealed that not even the chain’s top executive knows the ingredients. It was 65 years ago this month, at his roadside restaurant in Corbin, that Sanders perfected the blend of 11 herbs and spices for his ”finger lickin’ good” chicken.
