The former ANC chairperson and the deputy secretary of the OR Tambo Region were taken in for questioning after a shooting that left a man dead.
Cold and stormy weather that hit the Eastern Cape on the weekend has claimed three lives so far, police said on Monday. Two men apparently died from the cold near Mthatha on Sunday, while a woman was killed in a storm in the province’s Ngcobo area. By Monday afternoon, snow that had been falling over the province overnight was beginning to clear up.
A woman was killed and three other people injured during an overnight storm in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape, police said on Sunday. Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the woman (64) died when strong winds collapsed her home. ”There is lots of damage. Roofs were ripped off homes, whole structures came down, cars were damaged,” he said.
A third person has been arrested in connection with the murders of 18 people in the Mzamba area in the Eastern Cape, South African Broadcasting Corporation news reported on Wednesday. A special police task team set up to investigate the murders arrested the man in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday.

An Eastern Cape police captain charged with the possession of stolen goods was released on bail by the Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Saturday. The charges relate to the possession of unlicensed firearms, ammunition, stolen vehicles and stock cards, as well as defeating the ends of justice.

Seven awaiting-trial prisoners have escaped from an Mthatha jail, Eastern Cape police said on Saturday. Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said the men — arrested for crimes such as murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, theft and assault — had escaped from their cell at Wellington prison between 10pm and 11pm on Friday.
