Investigations into the incident at the South African Army Combat Training Centre in Lohatla in which nine soldiers were killed have revealed that the tragedy was caused by a mechanical failure, Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota said on Friday. The nine soldiers died when a 35mm Oerlikon GDF MK-5 gun malfunctioned at the training centre on October 12 last year.

Denel group chief executive Shaun Liebenberg will not renew his contract when it expires on May 31 next year, the company said on Monday. Liebenberg was appointed in 2005 to manage Denel’s turnaround. While the company posted a loss of R549,1-million for the financial year ended March 31 2007, gross profit rose to R754-million.

Efforts to rejuvenate the South African Army will see 3 000 new recruits being taken in next year, with the figure shooting up to 7 000 in 2009, it was announced on Thursday. ”We need a young and fit group of soldiers,” army chief General Solly Shoke told reporters in Pretoria.
