OWN CORRESPONDENT, Nairobi | Tuesday 6.30pm.
CRUSHED by India in their opening match, South Africa bounced back to score a convincing nine-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the L.G.Cup quadrangular tournament in Nairobi on Tuesday – spearheaded by a century from Lance Klusener.
The powerful pinchhitter, who was South Africa’s star during the World Cup, hit 101 off 104 balls which included four sixes to easily overhaul the target of 217 and gain revenge for their defeat at the hands of the Zimbabweans in the World Cup.
Skipper Hansie Cronje took over after Jacques Kallis became the only South African player to fall in their innings, bowled by Guy Whittall.
The Klusener-Gibbs stand surpassed the previous first-wicket partnership of 50 set by Paul Adams and Gary Kirsten against Zimbabwe.
Zimbabwe made a flying start, racing to a 99 for no loss.
But after the middle order collapsed, their wickets fell rapidly.
Paul Adams and Allan Dawson were the main wicket-takers, claiming three scalps apiece. –AFP
