Child shot during Yeoville eviction

A 10-year-old girl was seriously injured when two security guards opened fire on Yeoville residents while they were protesting their eviction from a block of flats on Tuesday, Johannesburg police said.

Captain Mashadi Selepe said the security company, Yellow Button, allegedly evicted a number of people from Earling Flats on the corner of Cavendish and Webb streets around 8am.

”They threw out their belongings and ordered them to leave the building without giving them an eviction order,” Selepe said.

The residents held a meeting at the community centre in the afternoon to discuss the situation.

While some of them then marched to the Yeoville police station, another group of residents returned to the block of flats to protest their eviction.

Selepe said two shots were fired at the chanting crowd from inside the building where security guards had been posted to prevent people from moving back.

A 10-year-old girl was hit in the stomach and rushed to hospital in a stabile condition.

Two security guards were arrested and will appear in court soon. – Sapa
