Four people were hospitalised after police fired rubber bullets at Lenasia squatters protesting an eviction order on Tuesday, Soweto police said.
Superintendent Richard Luvhengo, said the group of squatters were blocking Lenasia’s main roads, the R554 and K43.
The group at R554 dispersed after the rubber bullets were fired, but protesters were still blocking K43 by 10am.
Luvhengo said four people sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital.
More than 4 000 squatters from Thembalehle informal settlement in Lenasia prevented vehicles from entering Lenasia, south-west of Johannesburg, on Tuesday morning.
”There is a very strong police presence. We will not leave until the situation has calmed down,” Luvhengo said. – Sapa
