Sandton’s sewers upgraded for World Summit

Almost R5-million would be spent on upgrading sewers in Sandton in the run-up to the World Summit on Sustainable Development in August, Johannesburg’s water and sanitation provider said on Monday.

Johannesburg Water (Pty) Ltd said in a statement that it had carried out an investigation of the water and sewer networks around the various conference and accommodation venues to determine their condition.

”While the investigation revealed that in most instances the infrastructure was of world standards some areas of improvement were identified,” the company’s representative Jameel Chand said.

He said the Sandton collector sewer, which services the Sandton central business district, was at the moment being upgraded.

A wider pipe was being inserted, which would accommodate the future growing demands of the Sandton city centre.

Chand said new technology would be used to minimise disruption to traffic during the upgrading.

Work to the sewers should be completed by mid-July. – Sapa
